What is Gold filled?
Gold Filled is made by heat and pressure bonding a layer of 14k gold to a brass core. The 1/20 notation refers to the ratio of karat gold to brass core by weight, which is 5% Karat gold covers the brass surface, making it tarnish resistant. Gold filled is 5 to 10 times thicker than gold plated jewelry.
How it differs from standard plated jewelry?
Gold plated jewelry is also another alternative to gold however the plating process is different. It is a gold and chemical bath over nickel and brass and sometimes sterling silver. To best describe this process is, the jewelry pieces are dipped in gold. The main difference is the thickness of gold added. Most plated jewelry is less than 1% ( .5 microns) of gold added to the base metal and because it is a very thin layer of gold, it will rub off. Also best described by customers as "Turn black"
